What Are The Characteristics Of A Narcassistic Personality?

Sometimes, our personal ambitions or selfish behavior can cause us to act irrationally toward the people around us. However, most of us have the moral clarity to evaluate the negative impact we have inflicted upon the people who were the target of aggression, greed, or insults. We try to correct the offending behavior, ask for forgiveness, and vow never to repeat the offending behavior.

There is a certain segment of the population who's ability for compassion and empathy is a foreign concept. These people do not care about the abusive psychological havoc they inflict on the people within their sphere of influence. Known by the psychiatric community as Narcissistic Personality Disorder, NPD, at least in part, is theorized to be caused by excessive praise or extreme criticism during childhood.

Even people that are close to you might suffer from this disorder. For instance, you have a friend that you have known for years, but the core of their personality is still basically an enigma to you. Those who are close to you might even enjoy insulting or criticizing you whenever they get the chance. When you inform of the hurt feelings you have endured, they only find new and different ways to verbally or physically abuse you. They never apologize for anything they have done, and never admit any wrong doing - blaming you for causing the action in the first place.

In some circumstances, it can be hard to cut ties with friends or family members that clearly have shown little respect for your humanity. You might sympathize with the relationship you have with a friend who treats you harshly. They might have suffered difficult life circumstances, and you don't want to abandon them. And, even though at times, they are unpleasant to be around - they have the capacity for great acts of kindness. Moreover, while you can choose you friends, you can't choose your family. Some blood relations need to be endured for the sake of unity.

NPD suffers cross every spectrum of the social and economic strata. They can hold positions of power and can be highly functional in all aspects of their lives. Your boss could be afflicted with NPD. Most people who complain of having difficult bosses might really dealing with someone who has NPD, instead of someone who is purely "driven" by ambition.

So, what are some of the characteristics of a narcissistic personality? How can you identify these traits in people that you deal with on an everyday or personal level. Please keep in mind that taken in part, not all the personality traits I will list are an indication of NPD. Also, whether or not someone suffers from this particular disorder, it is not normal for people that you let into your life, to insult, manipulate, or abuse you in any manner. People that have no regard for other people's feelings, or who constantly infuriate you with their impersonal, cruel, abusive, or dismissive behavior should be removed from your personal or social circle.
