Where Is This Generations Beetles?
When I hear the music of this new millenium, I just wonder how many of the artists producing it today will still be relevent it ten, or even twenty years from now. When the youth of America looks back on their musical memories, who will they say defined the "tone" of their generation? In my opinion, the music that is featured on the cable and radio stations today is the musical equivalent of junk food. I was fortunate enough to witness a time, (60's, 70's and 80's), where Motown, Rock & Roll, Soul, Disco, Folk and Funk, all took their turn with popularity throughout the decades. I could always find a song from each category that was uplifting or dance worthy. Unfortunately, I fear the days of musical diversity are gone and are not going to make a comeback anytime soon. If I had to name just one artist, or band that stood out over the last 30 years, it would have to be the Beetles hands down. In my opinion, they set the stage for Rock & Roll to expand and take on different forms of musical expression. When they left Liverpool in 1965, and hit the shores of America, there was a frenzy of excitement that I have not seen for any musical group or celebrity since. Even though they broke up in 1970, you can't find too many people in contemporary America who don't know who they are, or know at least one song. Their music can be enjoyed at any time, within any generation. If you search for their CD's on Amazon.com, you'll find that their popularity is still evident some 38 years later after they disbanded. From Let It Be, to Abbey Road, and the White Album, the majority of reviews that they receive from customers are at least four stars. I can only hope that this generation can find a group like the Beetles that provide them with many happy musical memories.
